Most ouds are strung with pairs of strings tuned in unison. But what happens if we borrow an idea from the 12-string guitar and tune the courses in octaves instead? In this video I demonstrate a different way of stringing the oud that creates a two-octave texture from a single course, giving the instrument a much bigger and more shimmering sound. By combining standard strings with lighter octave strings, the oud can produce a layered sound similar to a 12-string guitar while still maintaining the traditional playing technique with the risha. In the video I show: • How the octave string setup works • Which courses can be tuned in octaves • The string gauges I used • How the sound changes compared to normal oud stringing • Musical examples demonstrating the wider sound This setup can be especially interesting for: 1. Oud players looking for new tonal colors 2. Guitarists transitioning to oud 3. Musicians experimenting with extended range and texture The result is a sound that can feel larger, brighter, and more orchestral, while still keeping the character of the oud. Let me know in the comments if you’ve ever experimented with alternative oud string setups, or if you would try something like this yourself.
