𝐂𝐔𝐓𝐖𝐎𝐑𝐌𝐒 – 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐍𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓 𝐃𝐄𝐒𝐓𝐑𝐎𝐘𝐄𝐑𝐒 🌒🐛 The Silent Night Raiders of Young Plants Cutworms are one of the most dangerous seedling pests. They hide in the soil during the day and come out at night to cut down young plants at the base. A single night can leave a field looking empty if these pests are not managed early. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 𝗦𝗬𝗠𝗣𝗧𝗢𝗠𝗦 𝗧𝗢 𝗟𝗢𝗢𝗞 𝗙𝗢𝗥 👀 ✔ Seedlings cut at ground level and left lying on the soil. ✔Chewed leaves on the edges. ✔ Missing plants in patches across the field. ✔ Wilted seedlings collapsing suddenly. ✔ Burrows or small holes near damaged plants. ✔ Fat, curled caterpillars hiding in the soil when disturbed. 🔎 Best time to spot cutworms is at night — when they are feeding. During the day, they stay hidden in the soil. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗠𝗢𝗦𝗧 𝗗𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗨𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗘 𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗚𝗘 🚨 The larval stage (caterpillars) is the most destructive. Adult moths only lay eggs, but the hatched larvae are the ones that cut down seedlings mercilessly. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 𝗛𝗢𝗪 𝗧𝗢 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗧𝗥𝗢𝗟 𝗖𝗨𝗧𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗠𝗦 🎯 𝐏𝐚𝐲 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 👌🏻💪🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 ✅ Scouting & Monitoring 🔺 Check at night with a flashlight — that’s when cutworms are active. 🔺 Dig near damaged seedlings during the day to uncover hiding larvae. 🔺 Remove and kill cutworms immediately to reduce population. ➡️ When spraying, ensure to spray on both the plants and the soil around the plants. It is always IMPORTANT to drench (treat) the soil if it is known to have Cutworms. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 𝗖𝗛𝗘𝗠𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗟 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗧𝗥𝗢𝗟 (𝗙𝗔𝗦𝗧 𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡) 💥 👉 Bifenthrin – effective against soil pests. 👉 Imidacloprid – systemic action absorbed by the plant. 👉 Chlorpyrifos or Cypermethrin – treat the soil before planting if the field has a history of cutworms. ⚠ Always apply correct dosage, use protective gear, and rotate chemicals to avoid resistance. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 𝗢𝗥𝗚𝗔𝗡𝗜𝗖 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗧𝗥𝗢𝗟 (𝗦𝗔𝗙𝗘 & 𝗟𝗢𝗪 𝗖𝗢𝗦𝗧) You can use one or two of the following options: 👉 Wood Ash: Sprinkle around seedlings or across the field to repel cutworms. 👉 Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis): A natural biological insecticide that kills caterpillars without harming beneficial insects. 👉 Neem Oil Spray: Mix 10 ml in 1 litre of water and spray on seedlings to repel and disrupt cutworm feeding. 👉 Liquid Soap Spray: Mix mild soap in water and spray to suffocate soft-bodied larvae. 👉 Baking Soda Mix: Combine 3 teaspoons baking soda + 1 teaspoon neem or any vegetable oil + 1 teaspoon of liquid soap in 1 litre of water, shake well, and spray. Works as a repellent and natural pesticide. 👉 Hand Picking: Collect and destroy visible caterpillars at night. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 𝗘𝗫𝗧𝗥𝗔 𝗧𝗜𝗣𝗦 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗔𝗚𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧 ✅ ✔ Remove weeds and crop residues that harbor moth eggs. ✔ Rotate crops to break the pest’s life cycle. ✔ Flooding or deep watering before planting exposes hidden larvae. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 💥 FINAL WORD Cutworms are night assassins of young crops. But with night scouting, preventive soil treatment, and powerful organic tools like Bt, Neem oil, soap sprays, baking soda, and ash, farmers can stop the destruction before it spreads. 👉 Smart farmers don’t just plant — they guard their seedlings like treasure. 🌱💪 ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 📚 PAYOJU FARMS ENTERPRISE We don’t just farm — we raise smart, profitable farmers. 👉 For online practical lessons, Visit; www.payojufarms.com Empowering African Farmers to Feed the Future 🌍
