🎻Music: By @christodaskalopoulos1160 📍Project: Mega Cave of Kalavryta 📜 Details: The Great Cave is a historical monastery of Kalavryta. It is located ten kilometers northeast of Kalavryta near the road that connects the Patras - Athens National Highway with Kalavryta. It is built at the opening of a large natural cave, the Helmos mountain range, above the steep ravine of the Vouraikos river, at an altitude of 950 meters. The eight-storey complex of the Monastery captivates even the most indifferent visitor. The monastery's catholicon, dug into the rock, is a cross-shaped temple, inscribed with two splints. The Monastery, which is considered the oldest in Greece, was built in 362 AD. by the Thessalonian brother monks, Simeon and Theodore. While the two brothers were in Jerusalem, they each separately saw an apparition with the command to go to Achaia and find the Holy Icon of the Virgin Mary made of mastic and wax, crafted by the Evangelist Luke. After successive wanderings and revelatory dreams, they met here in 362 AD. the daughter Efrosyn, a shepherdess from the village of Galata (Zachlorou). She led them to the cave where the sought-after Holy Icon was, which the "Divine Assembly" herself had earlier discovered, and by the direction of a goat from her flock, who was going to the cave to drink water from the spring that was there. Today, this source of the cave, known as "the Source of the Maiden", is holy, while Euphrosyne is honored as a Saint. The Holy Icon, according to tradition, was located next to the spring and was guarded by a terrible dragon which was killed by lightning when it attacked the two monks who were trying to clear the sacred area from the dense vegetation. The Great Cave played an important role in the uprisings against the Turks. During the Revolution of 1821, the Monastery was a beacon of Orthodoxy and Hellenism. P.S.
