The CEOs of Spotify and LiveNation say the music industry has never been healthier. Music critics say it's dying. They're both right, they're just talking about completely different types of music. We used to categorize music based on genres (indie, shoegaze) or scenes (Detroit techno, Tiny Mix Tapes blog). But these terms became meaningless when Spotify started labeling artists with 1M monthly listeners as “underground” and Universal Music signees as “bedroom pop.” These CD-era terms no longer work in the streaming age, so we need a new vocabulary for understanding the modern music landscape. Without this common language, we’ll never agree on what’s wrong with the music world, and more importantly, how to fix it. So I've mapped out 4 new categories that explain what's actually happening: which music algorithms love, which they're killing, and why our current trajectory is great for CEOs and bad for listeners. ☁️ follow along @mkay__world on socials ☁️ join the Patreon for updates: / mkayworld 0:00 Intro – The Paradox 1:18 Category 1: Activity 2:21 Category 2: Mood 3:08 Category 3: Identity 4:40 Category 4: Art 6:25 Conclusion - We’re All Losing #MusicIndustry #Spotify #Streaming #IndieMusic #Algorithms #Culture
