Chucky Atkins Hits a Three & Ends Up with Cheese Pants

January 19, 2004 - In one of his last standout moments as a member of the Detroit Pistons, Chucky Atkins scored 14 points off the bench, including back-to-back fourth quarter threes, in an 85-77 win over the San Antonio Spurs. The victory, Detroit's 13th in a row, tied a franchise record. Prior to his fourth quarter heroics, Atkins was pining for a new pair of shorts after falling into a plate of nachos. Chad Shepard, son of longtime Detroit sportscaster Matt Shepard, came through in the clutch with the shorts update. Atkins, who was acquired alongside Ben Wallace in exchange for Grant Hill in 2000, served as the Pistons' starting point guard for two seasons before ceding his role to Chauncey Billups. Midway through the 2003-2004 season, Atkins was dealt to Boston in the blockbuster Rasheed Wallace trade. As of 2020, Atkins remains 10th on the Pistons' all-time leaderboard for career 3-pointers (409).
