CINCINNATI (WKRC) - It's a rapidly growing area for cosmetic surgery in women, but chances are you haven't heard much about it. It's an area of cosmetic surgery called cosmetic gynecology. It is used to help improve appearance, confidence and, sometimes, intimacy. And while it's a delicate topic not usually talked about, one young woman did say it's time to give this a voice. "So I started my initial research of this entire process or procedure back probably when I was 15. That's when I started feeling self-conscious about my body," she said. Her name is Kim, and for years she says she was bullied because this area of her body looked a little different. "They can say hurtful things and they don't even realize they are hurting somebody just because of how they look," Kim said. Kim admits it took years to finally reach out to Dr. Amy Brenner and associates. "I didn't talk to anybody about it at first because I was kind of embarrassed," said Kim. But Dr. Brenner, a women's health surgeon with specialized training in cosmetic gynecology says Kim is not alone. She says cosmetic gynecology is the most rapidly growing area of aesthetic medicine. Part of the reason Dr. Brenner says these simple in-office, outpatient procedures are more and more in-demand is because of a change in the conversation. "I think there's just a big paradigm shift in the world of people are getting more comfortable talking about sexuality, talking about what it looks like in their female genitalia because there are things that can be done if it's something that really bothers you," said Dr. Brenner. In most cases, what can be done is a surgeon can tighten, alter or removes excess tissue, which changes the appearance and sometimes improves function. In Kim's case, she says a change on the outside drastically changed her on the inside. "I am more confident in my own skin. I can wear tight clothes and not feel like everybody's looking at me, even though I know they weren't, but I was looking at myself -- I knew it was there. I know next summer I'm going to be able to feel fine going out in a bathing suit without board shorts because I'm going to feel comfortable in my own body. It just overall has made me feel so much better," she said. Similar to other cosmetic procedures, such as breast augmentation, they start at about $4,000. In most cases, they are not covered by medical insurance plans.
