Extraction of common conceptual components from multiple ontologies by Valentina Carriero. Understanding large ontologies, with diverse semantics and modelling practices, is still an issue, and has an impact on many ontology engineering tasks, such as ontology selection and reuse. While existing methods summarise ontologies by extracting the most important nodes or subgraphs, a complete overview of an ontology, and a comparison between multiple ontologies, are not supported. Based on the hypothesis that ontologies are designed as compositions of ontology design patterns, this seminar will present a method able to extract (i) conceptual components from multiple ontologies, which are used for ontology understanding and comparison, and (ii) the observed ontology design patterns implementing them. The seminar will also show experiments and results from the application of this method to two corpora of ontologies in the Cultural Heritage and Conference domains.
