HONEST MIXING ADVICE: REGGAE SUMMER This is mixing advice that is not specific to any one genre / musical style. The goal of this video is to give intuition on what mixing is and how mixing can differ depending on what you want to create. Key points: Ask yourself: What do I want? Mixing without a goal is aimless -- whether its a genre / reference track that you seek to emulate or a specific emotion that you want to create within the listener, having an awareness of that gives you direction and something to follow instead of just turning knobs hoping for a result. Volume is king. Increasing the volume individual tracks is 90% of what makes a mix "good" -- Can you hear everything that you want to hear? Are some sounds too loud and take up too much space? Are some sounds too quiet and get lost? These don't require multiple plugins or a cocktail of effects to "fix", these can be adjusted with the gain of the track and an ear for what sounds good to you. Sound Selection is more important than a "Good Mix". If the sounds you choose to compose a track do not align with your vision, "mixing" them is not going to change their underlying qualities. Rather take the time to choose sounds that pique your interest and THEN consider how to mix them in a way that you like. Good Performances are more important than a "Good Mix". If you record half-assed vocals, no amount of mixing is going to change that they aren't a full-hearted attempt. Rather take the time to give a real performance and put your whole heart into it and THEN consider how to mix them in a way that you like. Making music is creating space. What kind of space do you want to create? Your mixing choices shouldn't follow from what a tutorial on Youtube tells you is "correct", rather it should stem from what kind of sonic space you want to create. My setup is my Laptop (2021 Macbook M1), Audio Interface (Scarlett 2i2), Microphone (Audio Technica AT2020), and Headphones (Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO 80ohm).
