US soldier STORYLINE: Parts of northern Iraq continued to see intensive coalition bombing on Monday, while on the ground United States (US) troops and Kurdish fighters dug in to new positions. US B-52 bombers continued to attack targets in northern Iraq. Explosions could be seen on a hillside near the Iraqi controlled town of Mosul, Iraq's third largest city, on the border between Iraqi and Kurdish controlled areas. US aircraft also pounded Iraqi positions near the northern town of Kalak on Monday, aiding Kurdish fighters as they seized territory from Saddam Hussein's fleeing troops. Far fewer Iraqi troops were visible than in recent days, which could indicate that government forces were pulling back toward Mosul, the largest city in northern Iraq. In the village of Geiyr, on the frontline between Baghdad controlled territory and the Kurdish-controlled-north, Kurdish soldiers claimed Iraqi positions were vacated overnight. Refugees from the fighting, reported to be Iraqis, crossed from the south to the Kurdish side in vehicles loaded with their possessions. The US sent more than 12-hundred paratroopers into northern Iraq last week and has begun coordinating military activities with the Kurds, who have controlled northernmost Iraq since the 1991 Gulf War. Meanwhile, US troops at the strategically important airport at Harir, in the Kurdish controlled area of northern Iraq, were setting up joint positions with Kurdish soldiers.
