1908 Crossley ZA Gas Engine. Manufacturer: Crossley Brothers Ltd. Manchester England. Engine No. 55135. 125 h.p. (Town Gas) @ 170 r.p.m. 107 h.p. (Producer Gas) a 170 r.p.m. Built in February 1908 and supplied to A. Cowan and Sons, Sydney (Crossley Agents) and sold to Footes Joinery, Ipswich, Qld. to replace a 90 h.p. Engine. Ignition is by Low -Tension Ignitor operating in a pre -combustion chamber. Gas Engine exhaust temperatures can be very high (500 C.); To prolong it's life, the exhaust valve in this engine is water cooled. When working, this Engine drove a line shaft by means of a 3 ply riveted leather belt 60' (18 mtrs.) long x 11" (275 mm.) wide. This Engine worked continuously in Ipswich until 1944. It was purchased by AMRSQ. (Antique Machinery Restoration Society of Queensland) in 1991 and subsequently restored. Footage taken & edited by Rachel Buckley. AMRSQ. Library resource.
