How did the Golden Boot Awards really begin? Find out in this special edition of WOW and go wayback with host Rob Word as he recalls Pat Buttram's original concept and tribute to B Western icon, Bob Steele. The Golden Boot Awards are referred to as "The Oscars for Western performers and filmmakers." Rightly so! For 25 years, between 1983 and 2008, the cherished Golden Boots Award was presented to deserving practitioners who contributed so much to the development and preservation of the western genre in film and television. This special award wasn't just for the cowboy heroes, but encompassed legendary film heroines, villains, sidekicks, writers, directors, producers, stunt people and others who helped define our western heritage. Attendees came from all over the world for the annual celebration to honor these cinematic legends. The very first ceremony in 1983 bestowed Golden Boot Awards to, among others, Rex Allen, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Clayton Moore, Bob Steele, Dale Evans, Lee Van Cleef, Lash LaRue, Ben Johnson, Jack Elam and a couple of youngsters...Lee Majors and a kid named Bruce Boxleitner. It was a smashing success, benefiting the Motion Picture and Television Fund, and was followed by many years and many more honorees; a sampling includes: Clint Eastwood, Robert Duvall, James Arness, Kirk Douglas, Angie Dickinson, Buddy Ebsen, Sam Peckinpah, Jane Russell, James Garner, Charles Bronson, Tom Selleck, Buck Taylor, Gail Davis, Walter Hill, the Carradine brothers, Robert Mitchum, Katherine Ross, Sam Elliott, Robert Fuller, Hal Needham, Dean Smith, Burt Lancaster, Leo Gordon, Herb Jeffries and on and on and on. Find out more in this nostalgic trip back to Aug 15, 1998, when the evening was dedicated to the King of the Cowboys, Roy Rogers (1911-1998), and past GBA honorees were welcomed on-stage to thunderous applause by 1500 western film fans and friends. #westerns #filmhistory #moviestar #goldenboot #celebrity #celebrities #cowboys #actor #actors #actress #celebration #retro #robword #goldenbootawards #tribute #westerngenre #fundraising #introduction #introducing #director #geneautry #royrogers #hollywood #hollywoodactor #legend #goldenage
