I it's not easy. It's not clean. But, you know, when people come together passionately to fix something, they can actually make things happen. And, you know, I'm a living example of that now." 4. I grew up back in the seventies and eighties when I saw Young black and Hispanic women running for their life for a flower that is definitely medicinal and to be part of this now is just it's amazing. It's it's life changing to know that now we can do this freely without any repercussions, especially on our black and brown communities." 13. Wide of store 14. Close-up of cannabis 15. SOUNDBITE (English) Roland Conner, owner of Smacked Cannabis Dispensary: "And if this works for me, it's going to work for a lot of other people. So I'm standing on the shoulders of a lot of people who've suffered like I've suffered, went through what I went through and, you know, are still actually going through that. And they made a way, they made a lane for people can go from legacy to legal. And I'm pretty sure a lot of other people want to follow in his footsteps. And so if I can actually pave that way, that's what I want to do." 16. Roland during a TV interview STORYLINE: When the war on marijuana came sweeping through his New York City housing project decades ago, Roland Conner found himself going in and out of jail. Now, at age 50, he has opened the state's first legal cannabis dispensary run by someone previously punished under New York's old drug laws. His shop named "smacked" is in Manhattan's Greenwich Village opened to the public Tuesday with the state's support. It is New York's second legal place to buy recreational marijuana, but the first to benefit from a program that set aside dispensary licenses for people with pot-related criminal convictions. "It is an example of when the government decides to fix a problem that was caused many years ago and they want to right that problem," said Conner. Conner, who is now in real estate, said he spent nearly 18 months in jail when he was 19 and had no intension of going in the legal Cannabis business until he found out his some was going down the same path that got him locked up. "In saving him. I was saving myself. You know, so that's the best way to explain it," said Conner. Conner's 25-year-old son Darius said that his father told him that he didn't want to see him locked up. And before the public got a chance to make a purchase, Darius sold his father the shops first sale.
