Belgium. January 1945. The frozen heart of the Battle of the Bulge. Master Sergeant Leonard Funk Jr. stood in a Belgian farmhouse courtyard surrounded by ninety German soldiers with rifles pointed at his chest. He had just returned from reconnaissance to find that his own men, the paratroopers he'd left guarding German prisoners, had been overwhelmed and captured. The Germans had reversed the situation completely. The guards were now prisoners. And Funk had just walked into the middle of it. A German officer stepped forward, smiling. In perfect English, he said: "American, the tables have turned. You will drop your weapon now." Funk had maybe forty-five seconds before they decided talking was finished and just shot him. He was one man. They were ninety. All armed. All combat veterans. All watching him. The rational response was surrender. Drop the Thompson submachine gun. Raise his hands. Hope to survive as a prisoner of war. Leonard Funk did something else entirely. He looked at the German officer. He looked at the ninety rifles pointed at him. And he started laughing. Deep, genuine, belly laughter like someone had just told him the funniest joke he'd ever heard. The Germans hesitated. Confused. What was wrong with this American? #worldwar2 #americanhistory #ww2 #ww2secrets #military
