Historically, August often sets the seasonal low for gold. It’s not a guarantee, but the odds tend to favor a floor forming around this time. Silver, with its roughly 80% correlation to gold, naturally moves in tandem with it. While the correlation is a bit lower than it was decades ago, both metals still tend to track each other’s big moves. For silver, the technical setup has been essential. Breaking above $35 was a significant milestone. That level had been heavily watched, and once silver cleared it, the chart opened up to higher ground. Still, the rally has met resistance near $40. Currently, silver looks range-bound between $35 on the downside and just under $40 on the upside, waiting for a catalyst to break out of this band. But the real story may not be on the charts at all. Morgan points to unusual activity in the physical market. More silver is leaving the COMEX than normal, and that’s rare. The last time it happened in a big way was the late 1990s, when Warren Buffett stunned the market by quietly accumulating nearly 130 million ounces. His move rattled the exchange to the point where they changed the rules, limiting the number of contracts that could stand for delivery. Even then, COMEX couldn’t hand over the full amount at once. Buffett received 90 million ounces upfront, while the remainder was delivered later, with the exchange paying him hefty lease rates in the meantime. He shipped the metal to London, and that hoard ultimately became the foundation for the SLV silver ETF. Morgan’s point is that unusual outflows today might be signaling a more profound shift. When physical demand drains the system, paper trading ranges become less relevant, and that’s when the metals market tends to surprise. David Morgan notes that while some in the industry speculate Warren Buffett might still have exposure to gold — maybe even a little silver — that’s essentially guesswork. Given his age and the fact that he’s already dipped in and out of silver multiple times, Morgan doubts Buffett would get directly involved again. The real story remains what happened in the late 1990s, when Buffett shocked the market with his 130 million ounce purchase off the COMEX. At the time, the number sounded astronomical. Headlines ran with the figure as though it were a world-shaking bet. But in reality, the position was modest when measured against Berkshire Hathaway’s total assets. It represented less than 2% of the company’s balance sheet. It was so minor relative to Berkshire’s size that it didn’t even appear in the annual report as “silver.” Instead, it was buried under a line item for “miscellaneous investments.” If you run the math — the number of ounces multiplied by the prevailing silver price — the total lines up almost exactly with that entry.
