During your surgical procedure you received a local anesthetic to numb the surgical site. This numbness will typically last from 2 to 6 hours. Often other areas will be numb which can include the lips, chin, gums and other areas of the face. It’s critical that you do not accidentally bite areas that are numb such as the lips or tongue. As the local anesthetic begins to wear off some degree of discomfort should be expected. This discomfort can be greatly reduced by initially taking your pain medication as directed, during the time you are numb. Do not be alarmed if numbness of the lip, chin or tongue persists more than 24 hours after your surgery. As discussed in your pre-operative visit, this is usually temporary and is due to the roots of the teeth being in close proximity with the nerve that supplies sensation to these areas. If you be experiencing any prolonged numbness, lasting longer than 24 hours, please call your oral surgeon.
