So I decided to give this show a shot and I absolutely loved it. So much of what this show is about comes down to storytelling: the stories Rust and Marty tell the detectives in 2012, the stories they both use to get through the day. Rust tells himself a story in which nothing in life means anything and he therefore has nothing to lose. I really liked his character. In the beginning we see him as someone who is avoiding others because he's trying to keep it together, and is relying on the job to actually survive. Seven years later, he still relies on the case as his lifeline but after things didn't work out with Lori, resigns to his nature, once again. At the end he has endured the existence and wrestles the devil every day, and he realizes that this may last a lot longer than he ever hoped for. And I think this is the conclusion he comes to by the end of the series: he exists, and he is going to live this life. «Once there was only dark. If you ask me, the light is winning».
