On January 26th, 1942, Major Herbert George 'Blondie' Hasler took command within the Combined Operations Development Unit, previously known as the Inter-Services Training and Development Centre, located at the Royal Marines Eastney Barracks in Southsea. This unit focused on developing new equipment, crafts, and materials for amphibious warfare. Despite limited funding, they created valuable pre-war plans and the first assault landing crafts. Hasler, deeply involved in research, led an 'Experimental Party' in Southsea, working on explosive boats with Vosper’s boatbuilders to create the Boom Patrol Boat (BPB). Unlike the Italian model, the BPB allowed the pilot to escape after the mission. On April 15th, 1941, Hasler drafted a paper advocating for air-transportable Boom Patrol Boats, which were being trialed at Vosper’s. After presenting and revising this document, he outlined air transport methods at Combined Operations Headquarters. Seeking operational deployment, Hasler proposed a dedicated unit using Boom Patrol Boats and canoes, which would handle surface obstructions and facilitate post-mission extraction. This led to the creation of the Royal Marine Boom Patrol Detachment. The unit experimented with air-dropping the Boom Patrol Boat, using an Avro Lancaster Bomber to release the boat with parachutes. Footage shows the Boom Patrol Boat's descent and splashdown, demonstrating the Royal Marine Boom Patrol Detachment's technological innovation and bravery during World War II. Their efforts significantly advanced amphibious warfare capabilities.#WorldWarII #AmphibiousWarfare #MilitaryInnovation #royalmarines #BoomPatrolBoat #BlondieHasler #CombinedOperations #MilitaryHistory #WartimeTechnology #NavalWarfare #WWII #AvroLancaster #MilitaryResearch #historicalinnovation 🔗 Stay connected with us: Website: https://worldwar2-sof.com Instagram: / ww2.sof Facebook: / worldwar2sof Threads: https://www.threads.net/@ww2.sof Patreon: / specialforcesinworldwar2 Spotify: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/sh...
