It is a 2.5 hour drive without stop. But you have to stop to experience so many different places along the way. Take a day trip and relax the beautiful drive is the best way to travel south Island. Lake Pukaki is the largest lake in the Mackenzie District covering 178 sq kms along the northern edge of the Mackenzie basin under the magnificent presence of New Zealand’s highest mountain Aoraki/Mount Cook. Glacial fed, its waters are turquoise blue caused by ‘glacial flour’ particles suspended in the water.
