We sometimes do Rehabilitation Training for drivers who can no longer drive a vehicle with a conventional pedal layout. This is sometimes called "Left Foot Accelerator", although we prefer to call it "left-foot pedals" as it's important to remember that the brake is now also going to be left-footed. The training starts before the driver even has their first lesson, and involves them buying a couple of tennis balls and stuffing them in a sock! Here's how it works...… In this video we are going to show you what may seem like a very strange idea. But bear with me as I explain why this is so important to your driving rehabilitation training. Because you have been driving manual cars in the past, your left foot is associated not just with changing gear, but is also associated with slowing and stopping the car. This can create a very dangerous situation if you lose focus and try to push the non-existent clutch down to the floor. You have, of course just floored the gas pedal! And it’s likely that because you were trying to stop, there is a car in front of you: or even more worryingly, somebody walking across a zebra crossing. The aim of your rehabilitation and Left-Foot-Pedal training is to try to eliminate this clutch-habit and retrain your left foot to be associated with different driving tasks. If you think about how you used to operate the clutch pedal: it was generally push it down fast and with a lot of force and lift it with more precision. Your left foot will now need to learn to be gentle and precise when pressing and releasing the accelerator and brake. And this retraining can start even before you take your first lesson in an adapted vehicle. I’d like you to make a set of car pedals: I’ll show you how to do this in a moment, using a sock and two tennis balls. Tennis balls have a very similar feel and squishiness to car pedals, and I’d like you to spend some time practicing pressing and squeezing them very gently, as though you were driving. So here is a video on how to make these practice pedals… and I’ll see you again afterwards. So please go ahead and make this. I know it seems a really bizarre thing to ask you to do but I promise you it really will help if you can start retraining your left foot before your first lesson. As well as using the tennis balls in the passenger seat, you can also use them with a dining room chair and simply visualise a journey that you are familiar with, driving that journey with your left foot. Just remember that the accelerator is on the left and the brake is now on the right. #LFA #Disability #LeftFootAccelerator #LeftFootPedals
