Astronomers have discovered a nearby supermassive black hole in the Large Magellanic Cloud, making it the closest known giant black hole outside the Milky Way galaxy. This groundbreaking discovery was made using data from the ESA Gaia mission, which tracks the motion of stars with ultra-precise accuracy. Researchers identified a group of hypervelocity stars—stars moving so fast that they will escape the Milky Way’s gravitational pull. Some of these stars originated from the supermassive black hole at the Milky Way's center, but others were ejected from a previously unknown black hole in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Using advanced astrophysics models, scientists confirmed that these hypervelocity stars were created when binary star systems passed too close to this hidden supermassive black hole. The immense gravitational force ripped the stars apart, capturing one in orbit and flinging the other outward at speeds of millions of miles per hour. This finding provides strong evidence that the Large Magellanic Cloud harbors a black hole over 600,000 times the mass of the Sun, a discovery that challenges current theories about galaxy evolution and black hole formation. This study was conducted by researchers from the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian, in collaboration with Caltech and the European Space Agency. Their work sheds light on how black holes shape galaxies, eject stars, and influence the cosmic landscape. 🔭 Watch now to learn how this hidden supermassive black hole was finally detected!
