Eisenhower's VP and Joe Biden Barack Obama's. John Tyler, Millard Fillmore, Andrew Johnson, Chester A. Arthur, Theodore Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, Harry S. Truman and Lyndon B. Johnson all ascended to the presidency abruptly following the deaths of their predecessors. Whig John Tyler set the precedent for Vice Presidents taking the office and serving a term of their own when he took the Oath of Office in 1841. Over America's two hundred and fifty years there have been many vice presidents who tried to get elected as POTUS but failed. John C. Breckinridge, vice president to James Buchanan, ran against Abraham Lincoln in 1864 and then more than a century later Walter Mondale, former vice president to Jimmy Carter, ran against Ronald Reagan.
