Throughout the course, troops exercise in snow and freezing ice water, braving extreme temperatures of around minus 30 degrees Celsius (minus 22 Fahrenheit). The exercises at the camp, 182 kilometres (113 miles) east of Seoul, are designed to help them adapt to severe weather conditions. The annual training course takes place at the coldest time of the year, to improve the ability of the special forces to cope with sub-zero temperatures. At Friday's session, the special warfare forces practiced physical training and gymnastics, as well as swimming in the cold water. The training also included skiing, a vital means of transport in severe winter conditions.
