How To Propagate Wisteria, Wisteria From Cuttings, Layer Cuttings Of Wisteria, Growing Wisteria From Cuttings So this is a different method of plant propagation, normally one saved for use on plants that are harder to propagate through normal stem cuttings. In the case of Wisteria, layer cuttings will produce a plant that will flower after only a couple of years rather than taking about 6-8 years from normal stem cuttings. Tools Required; Clean and sharp secateurs, Hormone rooting powder or gel, Trowel or fork. Select the stem you wish to use for your layered cutting. Ideally the stem should be located towards the outside of the main plant, and be flexible enough that it can be bent down to ground level. Using a hand trowel or fork dig out a section of ground into which the plant stem is to be buried. The hole should be about 5cm (2”) deep and about 10-12cm (3-4”) long. Taking the plant stem in one hand, carefully make a small incision along what will be the underside of the stem, so the incision passes through the leaf joint/joints that are to be buried. You can apply hormone rooting compound to the open incisions if you want to. Carefully bury the plant stem with the dug out soil, using a twig, stone etc to add as a weight to hold the plant stem down in the ground, until roots have formed. Depending on the time of year rooting will take 6-9months. Once rooting has occurred the rooted part of stem can be carefully dug up and the stem cut from the main plant.
