A person’s mindset is their conscious and unconscious thoughts, assumptions, emotions, and attitudes related to themselves, others, their place in the world and the world around them. Because of this, it’s easy to see how a person’s mindset influences their thoughts and actions and ultimately impacts their relationships and actions. Developing a growth mindset starts with the belief that a person’s intelligence and abilities can be improved with the right effort and strategies. Students who believe that about themselves are more likely to reach their goals, bounce back from struggles, and achieve higher academic and functional performance. According to Mayo Clinic, a person’s mindset also impacts their health and psychological well-being. Here are a few things to consider and implement when working to help students in developing a positive, growth focused mindset: • Teach lessons on the “Growth Mindset Theory” which includes teaching a willingness to confront challenges, a passion for learning, and looking at challenges as a spring board for growth. • Talk about, model, and teach stress management techniques including deep breathing, healthy eating, exercise, and enjoyable hobbies and activities • Have students explore characteristics of thinking differently especially fixed vs growth mindsets • Read or share inspiring videos, stories, and quotes from people with this mindset like Thomas Edison, Martin Luther King, JK Rowling, Walt Disney, and Tony Robbins. • Have students keep an attitude journal • Discuss negative thought patterns and how to change them As part of each episode of Transition Tuesday, we provide additional tips, teacher tools, and resources related to the topics we cover.
