It's Japan's most active volcano and is constantly spitting out smoke and ash. I got there cheaply and easily by taking a tram and ferry. The ferry costs just 250 Yen each way, about $1.70 USD, and one leaves every 15 minutes. Really convenient. At the Sakurajima visitor centre they have some footbaths set up so you can enjoy soaking your legs in the mineral-rich hot spring water. It was a nice experience but I probably would have enjoyed it more if it wasn't already boiling hot outside of the water. I visited Sakurajima on one of the hottest days of the year. Somehow I thought it would be a great idea to rent a bicycle and cycle the loop of the volcanic island, despite the extreme weather. Thankfully there were plenty of vending machines on the route and I pretty much stopped at every one to quench my thirst. The most interesting thing to see on the Sakurajima loop is the Tori Gate that's buried under lava from the massive 1924 eruption.
