When the Mississippi River moved, the former Davis plantation switched to the river's west bank, but is still considered Mississippi. Located near Newellton, Louisiana it is now a private hunting ground as the plantation burned down. Back in the 1840 Jefferson Davis met with his slaves and decided to end slavery on his plantation. He reclassified the slaves as servants and allowed them to earn outside income. He educated them and trained them to take over the plantation. Eventaully he financed the sale of the plantation to the former slaves led by Benjamin Montegomery, who applied for a patten on a low water steamboat propeller. Benjamin became the first elected black in Mississippi and his son the first elected black mayor. Davis was wounded durng the Mexican-American War and became Secretary of War. He successfully pushed for a railroad from Los Angeles to New Orleans in the 1850s. The railroad greatly expanded the economics of New Orleans.
