I visited with Mike Errol Saunders and his lovely wife Cheryl, they have been living off the grid since 2018 in a very remote location in the Klein Karoo. It was great to see what they have achieved here in a space of 8 years. Despite challenges over the years, the main ones being road access, soil fertility for food production and water access, these have been addressed over time as one adapts and evolves according to the conditions presented to you by any piece of land. They have built a beautiful natural home using materials locally sourced close to the homestead, they generate their own electricity, catch and store rain water, grow the bulk of their fruit, vegetables and a food forest of which much of the seed is processed and sold to the public by Mike (Free from Nature seed with an extensive seed bank). Mike is a very practical, knowledgeable guy and super passionate about sharing what he has learnt over the years especially for natural building, through his own experience, trial and error and extensive research he has much to share with others wanting to begin their off grid life.
