To prevent this, the International Journal of Cancer (IJC) requests proper authentication of all human cell lines used in a manuscript before starting the peer review process. Here, we present an overview of the cell line-related problems observed in these manuscripts. In our study, detailed cell line-related information was documented for 747 manuscripts submitted to the IJC between July 2018 and June 2021 and considered for peer review. Misidentified cell lines were identified through verification of the submitted cell line authentication documentation, if available, and by crosschecking the Cellosaurus knowledge resource, which contains detailed information on numerous problematic cell lines. Based on the available information, it was found that 22.9% of the manuscripts had mild (5.5%), moderate (9.8%), or severe (7.6%) cell line-related problems. Following-up on some of the papers rejected from IJC for cell line-related issues, we surprisingly observed that most (67.9%) of them were subsequently published in other journals, including the data of the misidentified cell lines. Our study emphasizes the importance of strict editorial quality control procedures to prevent the publication of data based on misidentified cell lines. Therefore, journals and publishers should become more actively involved in order to avoid publishing studies that include misidentified cell line data and to rectify any previously contaminated published records.
