Initially founded by a small group of boat operators working together during the 1958 season, including individuals like Jeff, Frank, and Vernie Thompson, Leonard Hicks, and others, the association has expanded over the years to include more members and boats. Key developments within the association have included the addition and departure of various members, changes in boat ownership, and transitions between generations within families. One noteworthy mention is Garfield Ellis, who, along with Gutherie Pender, acquired the Lily of Laguna in 1977 and subsequently joined the association. Ellis retired in 1998, passing the torch to Andy Howells, who took over the Buccaneer, later replaced by the Osprey in 2003. The interview also discusses instances of boat replacements, retirements, and shifts in ownership, underscoring the dynamic nature of the association over the years. Despite these changes, the members have maintained a strong working relationship, with each boat remaining individually owned and each skipper holding full responsibility for their vessel.
