Did the Ottomans face European knights in full-plate armor? In the following video, Bede (Razmafzar Australia) and I talk about the type of European armor, they faced in battles. In contrast to some erroneous beliefs held by some reenactors and SCA practitioners, the Ottomans indeed faced European plate armor and knew how to deal with it on the batlefield. The Ottomans faced European knights in full plate armor, particularly during the 14th to 16th centuries, when plate armor was at its peak in Western and Central Europe. The Ottomans encountered heavily armored European forces in several major conflicts, including: Battle of Nicopolis (1396) – A crusader army, including French and Hungarian knights in full plate, was defeated by the Ottomans.; Battle of Varna (1444) – Another crusading force, featuring heavy cavalry in plate armor, was crushed by Sultan Murad II; Siege of Belgrade (1456) – Hungarian knights, including John Hunyadi’s forces, fought the Ottomans while wearing plate armor; Ottoman-Hungarian Wars (15th–16th centuries) – Hungarian and later Habsburg men-at-arms often wore full or partial plate; the Great Siege of Malta (1565), and Ottoman-Habsburg Wars (16th century) – Conflicts in Hungary and the Mediterranean saw armored Spanish, German, and Italian troops facing Ottoman forces.
