Great Western Railway - Tarka Line on August 12th 2018

The 4th and final onboard on Day 3 of my southwest visit is over the Tarka Line from Barnstaple to Exeter St Davids. Barnstaple originally opened on the North Devon Railway in 1854 to Credition. The present station dates from 1874 originally know as Barnstaple Junction where the station use to connect with the Ifracombe Line to Bideford however been terminus since 1965 although the station name dates from 1971. The former Ifracombe line now forms the Tarka Trail or South West Coast Path. For the station itself now houses a cafe opened in 2008 in the station building. We're onboard a 2 car Class 150 on 19:26 service to Exeter St Davids. The 1st station to pass is Chapelton which is a request stop opened in 1854 however the present station dates from 1875. In 2016 Chapelton was ranked as the 9th least used station in Britain. At Umberleigh trains often stop here with hourly operating Mondays to Saturdays and 2 hourly on Sundays in either direction. Our train passes Portsmouth Arms named after a nearby which adjacent to the station itself. It's also located within a mile of an English historic Manor House called Northcote Manor which was rebuilt in 1716 now serves as a hotel. Originally opened with 2 platforms however the former down was taken out of use around the time the line was singled. After passing under the A377 and out of shot is Kings Nympton which opened as South Molton Road which was renamed to todays name in 1951. The first compulsory stop on our service is Eggesford station which once had a signal box until it was taken out of use in 1987. a passing loop with the main reason being the line between Barnstaple and Crediton being tokened in 2 sections with the 1st section between Barnstaple and Eggesford the down train has to wait for the up train to arrive as well as exchanging the token of the next section from here to Credtiton due to fact only 1 train is allow on the section at a time. The train passes Lapford like Portsmouth Arms had originally 2 platforms however the 2nd platform was eventually removed as well as former goods sidings. Although certain bridges crossing the River Taw are built for double track between Eggesford and Copplestone however a 2nd line has never been built. Another passing stop is Morchard Road which is a quiet station and request stop which is named after the Morchard Bishop which a few miles to the North east. Copplestone is another request stop but our train stops here to allow some passengers to alight as well as board. The station itself has since opening only have just one platform. Just before Yeoford our line joins at Coleford Junction alongside the Dartmoor Line from Okehampton however unlike in the video of that line itself we approach Yeoford in the southern direction.    • Great Western Railway - Dartmoor Line on A...   The original route opened in 1865 when passenger services ran via Okehampton, Bude as well as Bere Alston on the Tamar Valley Line to Plymouth but in 1968 services was cut back to Okehampton. In 1972 passenger services to Okehampton were withdrawn however were reinstated in 1997 nowadays GWR only at present provide a Sunday Summer service from Exeter St Davids. Yeoford although has one platform is a request stop at present however the former up platform on the Dartmoor Line is still intact which plans to be reinstated to allow interchange between the 2 lines however nothing has been proceeded. Just before Crediton our train stops at a signal box on the level crossing to hand the token with the rest of the line being controlled south by the signal box as far as Cowley Bridge Junction. Credition is the only interchange of the 2 lines but also a passing loop with 2 platforms. The station itself still retains it's LSWR colour feel to it. Our train passes the final stop on the Tarka Line being Newton St Cyres which opens on May 12th 1851,It’s nowadays a request stop however due to the height differences between train and station platform passengers can only be allowed to board or alight by the conductor via the Crewman’s door. At Cowley Bridge Junction the Tarka Line crosses the River Exe and joins up with the Bristol to Exeter Line to Exeter St Davids. Our train arrives back into Exeter St Davids into Platform 1 where after terminating with proceed to the Exeter TMD sidings which is located near to Platform 6 which at the time of filming was being expanded for the arrival of the new Hitachi Class 802s. However after filming the Tarka Line due to bad light and heavy rain that soon followed, Filming of the avocet line to Exmouth was postponed until the next morning. Filmed on Sunday August 12th 2018 on iPhone 8 and edited on iMovie.
