(22 Jun 1998) English/Nat Highly organized groups of neo-Nazis who rampaged through Lens before and after Sunday's Germany-Yugoslavia game, left a French policeman in a coma after being clubbed with an iron bar. The policeman lies in a coma in hospital in the French city of Lille. One German fan is due to appear in court on Tuesday charged with allegedly injuring the policeman. In this Lille hospital Daniel Nivel, a French policeman lies fighting for his life. Hospital officials said his condition has not improved after he collapsed unconscious in a pool of blood after being hit around the head. The neurosurgeon responsible for treating Nivel did not sound optimistic during a news conference at the hospital. SOUNDBITE: (French) "He is in a deep coma. He has brain lesions a seen on the scanner and lesions to the cerebral tissue too. We are battling against these bad injuries, giving him strong reanimation and are awaiting the results. We'll try to reduce the impact of the lesions and reduce his worsening but if there is a hemorrhage or blood clots is too early to say, we'll have to wait and see." SUPER CAPTION: Dr Patrick Chellems, Neurosurgeon German police have said man from Hanover was arrested for allegedly attacking Nivel. His name hasn't been released. SOUNDBITE: (French) "We are concerned about the outbreak of violence, which has left a Gendarme between life and death. We regret very much this confrontation between hooligans and the forces of law and order. An inquiry is under way; a person is being held for questioning and retained in custody. The questioning will continue. With regard to the evidence in our possession, we'll be passing that onto the instructing magistrate tomorrow afternoon." SUPER CAPTION: Christian Russel, Prosecutor The man will appear in court on Tuesday. The top French police officer Director General Bernard Prevost returned to Paris after visiting regional police about the attack and future security arrangements. Germany played down suggestions it was considering pulling out of the tournament because of the Lens violence. But FIFA's new president ruled out expelling any team from the Cup because of fan violence. French police are being aided by their counterparts from states around the world to identify troublemakers. Known hooligans are being deported and if they are detected are being refused entry into France. But police officers are determined that hooligans who are caught in France will face sentencing and a French prison.
