Shirakawa is in southern Fukushima. Since ancient times, the checkpoint in Shirakawa marked the border between the Tohoku and Kanto regions and the area prospered as a major transportation hub. In the Edo period, the Shirakawa clan was established and led by 7 families. However, in 1866, since Lord Abe was moved to Tanagura, Shirakawa had no lord and disappeared. In 1868, between the former Shogun and the new government the Battle of Toba-Fushimi broke out. It was the Boshin War. The government army advanced to the East Japan region. The two sides clashed in Shirakawa and fought for about 100 days. It was the Battle of Shirakawaguchi. More than 1,000 died in Shirakawaguchi including citizens of Shirakawa. The names of some soldiers were unknown. The people of Shirakawa built graves and monuments for the nameless soldiers. At more than 100 graves and monuments, still today, the people of Shirakawa pray for victims on both sides. ■Music:Jazztronik(Ryota Nozaki) ■City of Shirakawa:http://www.city.shirakawa.fukushima.jp City of Shirakawa
