It is not a very painful operation. Patients sometimes complain of sore throat, and a little bit of scratchy voice, but otherwise bounce back to their normal daily activities quickly. For patients that are undergoing total thyroidectomy, meaning removing the entire thyroid, or even part of it, they should know that they are going to be on thyroid medication daily for the rest of their life. Patients come in the day of the operation. Surgery is done under general anesthesia. We make an incision in one of the patients neck folds and get to the thyroid gland, which is carefully dissected out and removed, and then the incision is closed. Patients typically end up spending the night at the hospital and are able to go home the next day. I get the greatest satisfaction when I see my patients after the surgery in the office and they tell me that their pain has completely resolved since the operation.
