The Biblical Attitude to Work

David Pawson speaks about what the Bible says about Work . Dividing his teaching into three parts (“Creation”, “Fall” and “Redemption”), David Pawson states that in creation there was “a duty to work”, but that God intended this work “to be a delight”. He explores the consequences of the Fall for work, and how work can be redeemed through Christ. In examining the neglected topic of the Christian doctrine of work from the biblical perspective, David reframes work as an opportunity for Christians to witness to non-Christians in the workplace through their approach to work, which involves giving their all for God. David exhorts believers to “make Monday special” because practising one’s faith should not be a “leisure time activity”. This requires a radical reassessment of our work. We are to leave behind the view influenced by Ancient Greek culture that saw work as the enemy of leisure and we should not regard work as a “necessary evil”. Christians must not engage in the “immorality of work”, where they seek to do as little as possible for maximum remuneration, nor should they make work an idol and become workaholics. Crucially, he argues that no job that is moral should be looked down upon. We only have to look at the example of Jesus in his work as a carpenter to see that the Bible’s attitude to manual work is that it has dignity. David explains why it is that being the only Christian at work could be preferable to working with other Christians because of the opportunities to witness. Christians are to “glorify the Lord” (their Boss) through the quality of their work and their approach to work, including their honesty and reliability. The work we do on earth will prepare us and qualify us (if done effectively) for the jobs that we are given in the new earth. Because we are working for the future; we are the people of tomorrow.
