Host Aaron Schey from Habatat was joined by artist Weston Lambert to discuss his life, career, and work. Weston, an incredible and talented artist, combines earth minerals with glass to create unique one of a kind sculptures that are available at https://www.habatat.com. The artist has a large instagram following and is pushing the glass art medium into the future. Here are the questions asked: 1. Your work explores “the slow violence of geological processes.” Can you share how that concept first entered your creative vocabulary and how you translate such vast natural timelines into something human and tactile? 2. You often talk about dualities such as transparency and opacity, fragility and strength. How do you find balance between those forces in both your materials and your creative mindset? 3. Your sculptures combine glass and stone in ways that feel both ancient and futuristic. How do you approach marrying these two materials technically and emotionally? 4. You’ve said the kiln simulates geological time. Can you walk us through your process in the studio and explain how heat, pressure, and polishing become your tools of “accelerated evolution”? 5. Glass and stone each carry symbolic weight. When you begin a new work, do you start from the concept, the material, or the feeling you want to capture? 6. You’ve lived and worked across the United States from Hawaii to New Orleans to Tacoma. How have those environments shaped your sense of place and permanence in your art? 7. Your work spans from small-scale pieces to important public installations. How does your creative approach change with scale, and what challenges or freedoms come with each? 8. You’ve built a strong following on social media, which is rare for artists working in such physically demanding mediums. How has that platform changed your relationship with your audience or with your collectors? 9. We’ve had great success placing your work with collectors through Habatat. When someone lives with one of your sculptures, what do you hope they feel or understand over time?
