FREE Project Management Training: Deming PDCA Cycle Plan, Do, Check, Act William Edwards Deming was an American engineer, statistician and management consultant. He was instrumental in helping to rebuild Japan’s industrial infrastructure after WWII and is known as the “Father of Quality Management”. In the 1950's, Deming proposed that business processes be placed in a continuous feedback loop so that managers can identify and change the parts that need improvement. To do this he created a diagram to illustrate this continuous process, commonly known as the PDCA cycle for Plan, Do, Check, Act. To PLAN is to design or revise business processes to improve results. To DO is to implement the plan and test its performance. To CHECK is to assess the measurements and report the results to decision makers. To ACT is to decide on changes needed to improve the processes. The Deming Cycle is a simple but effective approach for problem solving and managing change, and it ensures that ideas are appropriately tested before committing to full implementation.
