Welcome to Alumni Stories – From Here On I’m Shawn Burns, a journalism lecturer here at the University of Wollongong. And I’m Nicky Evans, a media and communications lecturer at UOW. In this podcast, we speak with UOW alumni, academics and researchers, about where their studies have taken them, the work they do now, and what it looks like in practice. These are conversations about careers, research, and professional life, but also about uncertainty, wrong turns, and the things that don’t make it into course guides or brochures. Nicky and I are your hosts for this first episode, but we won’t be the last. As the series continues, senior journalism students will step into the host roles, learning how to conduct thoughtful, informed interviews while bringing their own questions and perspectives to the conversation. Our first guest is Callum Harvey. Callum grew up in the northern Illawarra, studied media and communication at UOW, now works in cybersecurity and digital policy, and an Oxford University PhD candidate researching how governments and technology companies respond to emerging threats around AI and disinformation.
