New Laser Treatment Gives Hope to Children with Epilepsy

At an early age Breyan Lumpkins was diagnosed with neurocysticercosis, a parasite from undercooked pork that had settled in her brain and formed a cyst, causing epileptic seizures. For a while, medication helped control the seizures, but when Breyan hit puberty, the situation worsened. With medication no longer working, Dr. Angus Wilfong of Texas Children’s Hospital suggested they consider surgery. Breyan was the second patient to receive the new epilepsy surgery, which was successfully performed by Dr. Daniel Curry and Dr. Angus Wilfong at Texas Children’s Hospital. After several days recuperating, Breyan went home and soon started high school. Breyan is now seizure-free. Texas Children's Hospital is the first hospital in the world to use real-time MRI-guided thermal imaging and laser technology to destroy lesions in the brain that cause epilepsy and uncontrollable seizures. This new surgical approach offers a safer and significantly less invasive alternative to craniotomy, currently the most commonly used cranial surgical treatment for epilepsy.
