In this video, we take an aerial and close-up look at Pauline’s Swamp in Burwell, Cambridgeshire, a unique and historic natural area that has been cared for by the local community for generations. History of Pauline’s Swamp The site dates back in the Parish records to around 1805, and was later acquired by the Hawes family in 1992. It was officially established as a resource for the parish in 2007, when Mr. Paul Hawes kindly donated the site in a Deed of Trust to Burwell Parish Council in memory of his wife, Pauline. From 1885 to 1965, a railway ran through the southern part of the swamp, and you can still see the remnants of the old embankment today. The site is managed by the Trustees of Pauline’s Swamp with the help of professional advisors, along with the Friends of Pauline’s Swamp. Wildlife and Habitat Pauline’s Swamp covers a rich variety of habitats: Around 750 square metres of mature Aspen trees, under which grow wild carrot, ransoms, and bluebells. Mixed evergreen and deciduous species stretch along the boundaries and the southern end, near the old railway embankment. A Wet Fen Meadow next to a Seasonal Spring supports tall herb fen, soft rush, sedges, and notable species like fen marigold. The Dipping Pond, fed by calcareous water from the Seasonal Stream and groundwater, has a seasonal depth of 0.3–1.2 metres and supports native water lilies, calara, and a variety of flora and fauna. Why It Matters Pauline’s Swamp is not just a peaceful natural retreat; it’s also a living record of the Fenland’s ecology and history. This video aims to celebrate the site’s beauty, biodiversity, and the community effort that keeps it thriving. 🛸 Drone: DJI Mini Mavic 🎵 Music: Various copyright-free sources (Pixabay, Bensound, Tunetank)
