How to pose, light and photograph the older women for portraits. The camera knows no age. This woman, who on paper could be doddering and forgetful, is vibrant, full of humor and talents, has friendships with people of all ages and is always looking forward to the next challenge. The camera was able to capture all those things in these 4 images. Oh by the way, she just turned 85! Lighting is always a challenge. The human face can take on so many different looks depending on the lighting the photographer chooses. Certainly, to show women of a certain age at their best, skin texture is a concern. The lighting should be quite flat, so that the contrast is minimal. This will give the impression of a smoother over all look. Make-up should not be overplayed, but somewhat subtle. And of course a catch light in the eyes is essential to brighten the entire look. In these images, I used window light and put my subject in a large light box made of poly foam board (2"insulation") from Home Depot. That way the side light bounced all around her and gave an even glow to her. In others I used back light and also a softbox with a flash to act as fill light. The flash was set at a very low power for a natural look. I actually did a minimum of Photoshop on her because, well, she didn't need much. But if you feel the need to PS an image, try to keep it real, and don't over soften the lines etc. And don't remove bags, but the dark portion under the bags. The healing tool and clone tool are ideal for this.
