People have always depended on resources from the environment for survival, as well as for the successful growth and stabilization of their communities. These resources include the water we need for domestic, agricultural, and industrial uses. CAELI is a public–private partnership working to increase access to relevant and impactful environment-based learning for all of California's K–12 students. By using the environment as context for learning, students gain real-world knowledge, asking questions and solving problems in their own back yards that they can touch and feel. The proposed structure for integrating environmental literacy into the classroom requires critical thinking and inquiry, allowing students to see where they fit into the world, and where they can have a positive influence at home, at school, at work, and in their communities.
