On Thursday, December 11, 2025, the Johann Fust Library Foundation was honored to present Libby Buck, who spoke about her debut novel, Port Anna, published by Simon & Schuster in July 2025. Set in coastal Maine, Libby has said that the book is her love story to Maine and was inspired by the many summers she has spent there. Sometimes life’s events force a person to change, and so it is for Gwen Gilmore, the story’s protagonist. In the course of one year, she loses her mother, her teaching job, and her longtime boyfriend. The accumulation of losses propels her to pack her old car, leave North Carolina, and go to Maine. There, she moves into Periwinkle, the family’s aging cottage, which she recently inherited. Once in the cottage, she encounters the friendly ghosts, known as The Misses, that inhabit the place. She also faces the ghosts of her past—boyfriends, forgotten creative dreams, and painful memories of a sister lost too young. The novel presents themes of community, reconciliation with the past, grief, romance, and friendship. Enjoy listening to Libby read from her novel and speak about the inspirations that led her to this story.
