A family in Kiambu is mourning the tragic loss of their 12-year-old daughter, Bridgit, a Grade 7 pupil, who died after being struck by a stray bullet in their home. The heartbreaking incident occurred around 6:15 p.m. as the family was watching television, following a day of intense running battles between police and protesters during the Saba Saba demonstrations. According to Bridgit’s mother, the family had spent the day apart. She had gone to work as a teacher, leaving the children with their father. Due to the heightened tension in the area caused by the protests, she left work early to return home and found her children safe and well with their father. Later that evening, while sitting on the sofa watching TV with her mother, Bridgit suddenly screamed that something had hit her head. When she touched her head, she found it was bleeding before collapsing onto the floor. Shocked and confused, her mother called out loudly to her husband, who was outside feeding chickens with their other children. When he rushed into the house, he found his daughter covered in blood. In a panic, he picked her up and, with the help of a kind neighbor, rushed her to St. Bridget Hospital. There, doctors performed a CT scan, which revealed that a bullet had lodged in her brain. Despite their efforts, Bridgit succumbed to her injuries within minutes. According to her uncle, Josphat Ndung’u, the family is in deep shock. He expressed disbelief at how a bullet could travel such a long distance—nearly 2 kilometers from the main road—and still strike and kill someone inside their home. He strongly condemned the incident and called for justice, saying Bridgit was an innocent girl who had nothing to do with the demonstrations. Ndung’u also revealed that at least six people in Kiambu lost their lives due to gunshot wounds during the protests, with several others left injured. He urged President William Ruto to engage in dialogue with the Gen Z protesters and address the grievances raised by the youth.
