Silent Solo Hiking the best 14er in Colorado? Known as Grays Peak, this 14er is 7.3 miles long out and back with 3,000ft of elevation gain. You also have the option of adding on Torrey's peak for an extra mile and 800ft. I was planning on this but the weather had other ideas. Thank you for watching. Let me know of any hikes you would like for me to check out and film! | ABOUT THE HIKE | Overall Rating: 9.2/10 Difficulty: This is a 14er, meaning a 14,000ft peak. This makes breathing much more difficult as you reach about 13,000ft. So this is a difficult hike on average, as is the majority of 14ers. BUT, as far as 14ers go, this is not a notably difficult one. The elevation gain is relatively steady with switchbacks to ease the blow. It did become quite windy which made it slightly more difficult but that is to be expected in high elevation. To summarize, yes this is a difficult because it is a 14er. But it is a good option for your first 14er because it is not a crazy one and because of the points in the Overall section. Access: The only reason this hike did not get higher than a 9.5 is because of the access. By far the worse access to a trailhead that I have ever encountered. The dirt road off the highway that leads to the trailhead is EXTREMELY bumpy with large rocks that need to be dodged. An AWD / 4WD vehicle is required no matter the season. Clearance on your car is a must otherwise I guarantee you will bottom out. Second. You either need to sleep at trailhead the night prior or get to trailhead no later than 6am if you want a parking spot. I slept at trailhead the night prior. Overall: This is my favorite and in my opinion, the best 14er in Colorado. I have done quite a few and this one blows them all out of the water. This is because of the views. It feels like you are hiking in a canyon in the beginning before the gain and the views are simply unique. The view at the thumbnail is enough for me to want to go back several times.
