00:00 " The Tin Crown": A young man recounts his time on Beaver Island in the mid-1800s, where James Strang, a self-proclaimed successor to Joseph Smith, built a Mormon kingdom. At first, life on the isolated island seemed hopeful, but Strang’s rule turned authoritarian. He crowned himself king, demanded strict obedience, and punished dissenters harshly. Tensions rose with outsiders and within the community, leading to fear, paranoia, and whispers of rebellion. In 1856, two disgruntled followers assassinated Strang, and shortly after, mobs from the mainland drove his people from the island. What began as a promised haven of faith ended in violence, exile, and haunting memories of betrayal and bloodshed. 06:26 "Murder on Mackinac": In the summer of 1960, a family vacation to Mackinac Island turns tragic when Frances, the widowed mother-in-law, disappears after going for a walk alone. Despite warnings to stay on the main paths, she is last seen speaking to an unknown tall man near the woods. As days pass, the family joins search parties, unnerved by strange encounters and the sense of being watched. On the third day, Frances’ body is discovered in a shallow depression, strangled and left half-hidden under leaves. The investigation points to several possible suspects among sailors, locals, and transients visiting for the yacht race, but no one is ever charged. The family leaves the island haunted by grief, the killer never found, and the memory of the island forever darkened by violence. 13:56 "Echoes Across": A backpacker sets out for solitude at Isle Royale’s remote South Lake Desor, only to overhear a father and son’s arguments spiral into disturbing threats late into the night. As screams and violent words echo across the lake, the backpacker flees in fear to warn rangers. Days later, authorities confirm both men were found dead, leaving the witness haunted by what unfolded in the wilderness and the chilling thought that he might have been the only one who could have intervened. 20:50 "Blood on the Lake": In 1736, a group of twenty-one voyageurs, led by Jean-Baptiste de La Vérendrye and accompanied by Jesuit priest Father Aulneau, set out from Fort Saint-Charles to collect supplies from eastern posts. Traveling in three canoes across the Lake of the Woods, they camped on a small island that seemed safe. But in the night, Sioux warriors ambushed them, furious over French alliances with rival tribes. The attack was brutal—men were shot, clubbed, and scalped, their bodies mutilated and their heads arranged in a grisly circle. The narrator, a voyageur, was the only survivor, managing to hide and later escape by canoe despite being wounded. After days of paddling alone, he reached the fort and delivered the devastating news. La Vérendrye, stricken by the death of his son and the priest, sent search parties who confirmed the massacre. The lone survivor never forgot the horror of Massacre Island, where silence and blood marked one of the darkest moments in the fur trade era.
