Coming up next, I must have a death wish to keep covering this band but I have the final part of my interview with one of greatest producers of the 70s and ‘80s who produced most of the tracks on the biggest selling album ever as well as 5th biggest selling album ever and he has some great behind the scenes stories on some true American classics including a legendary song that may be the most storied rock hit ever. Hotel California, and there are some stories here that have never been told, including the fact that the song had to be recut three different times. The first time it was cut i the wrong tempo, then the second time it was done in the wrong key. The third time was the charm, and then this producer got a front row seat to the greatest guitar battle of all time when the dual solo was recorded. Then there is the classic song that was just Joe Walsh’s warmup exercise, and the band talked him into making it into a song, and there was the song that was a source of contention between the guitarist and lead singer…The guitarist wanted to sing it, but the singer outfoxed him and got his vocal down on the final. These stories are next on Professor of Rock. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Executive Producer Brandon Fugal Honorary Producers Craig M, James Smith, Ardashir Lea, j lee, Michael Bedenbaugh ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subscribe to the Professor of Rock Podcast Apple: https://apple.co/445fVov Spotify: https://spoti.fi/42JpfvU Amazon: https://amzn.to/44b5D6m iHeartRadio: https://bit.ly/444h8MO ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Patreon: http://bit.ly/ProfessorofRockVIPFan Merch Store: https://professor-of-rock-merch.creat... It’s time for another episode of our series Revelations, where featured artists go deep on their greatest songs and albums. And get insights into the biggest hits of all time that you won’t find anywhere else. And we have a true legend today… Eagles producer Bill Szymczyk, on the stories behind the band’s last couple of albums, including Hotel California and The Long Run. Hotel California took quite a few recordings to get just right. The first version, the tempo was off, and the second, which was almost released, was recorded in the wrong key. Luckily, they recorded it a third time, and that one took. Bill got a front row seat to watch Don Felder and Joe Walsh battle it out on the greatest dual guitar solo ever, and then there was the song Victim of Love that guitarist Don Felder brought it and wanted to sing. So apparently, he recorded a scratch vocal, but it didn’t meet the Eagles' Standard. So Henley took over. Actually, the band’s manager took Don Felder out to dinner to give Henley enough time to record the vocal that ended up being the final master. Don Felder was not happy about it. There was no love lost between Don Felder and some in the Eagles. Felder was ousted from the band after they got back together, and then there was a lawsuit. Don Felder sued The Eagles in 2001 after being fired, alleging wrongful termination, breach of contract, and breach of fiduciary duty, seeking damages. Then the band countersued to block his tell-all memoir, "Heaven and Hell: My Life in the Eagles”. Which, honestly, is one of the best music books I’ve ever read. The lengthy legal battle, which exposed the band's private business practices, was settled out of court in 2007 for an undisclosed amount, allowing both sides to move on. That undisclosed amount has never been proven, but it was allegedly for tens of millions. And the bad blood continues to this day. I would love to interview every member of the Eagles, and it would be interesting to interview Don Felder, but I’ve been told between the lines that if I ever want to interview a certain member of Eagles, I'd better never sit down with Felder or I’ll be shut out Can’t we all just get along? Well, let’s get into the interview. Thanks for watching. Leave us a comment about Eagles. What are your memories of their music?
