We spent the weekend in Christchurch. We sampled the food at the Riverside Market, visited the Cathedral Cardboard, Christchurch Cathedral and Botanic Garden. We also went to Antartica. The trip to the ‘Garden City’ was our first travel after lockdown. Travel restrictions eased but face masks are required onboard all New Zealand domestic flights. Safety precautions to COVID19 are still ongoing. Day 1 – Riverside Market Riverside Market is in Christchurch CBD near the Bridge of Remembrance. We read a lot of positive comments about this indoor market, so we decided to check it out ourselves. Riverside Market is a food hall in a medium size building. There are variety of food outlets and stalls. A wide selection of fresh produce, artisan food, baked goods, and beverages can be found in this market. Oh, I spotted Baklava. It is a sweet dessert, made of layers of filo pastry filled with chopped nuts and held together with syrup. Bars, restaurants, market stalls, boutique shops are all house in Riverside Market. Foodwise, depending on one’s appetite customers are spoilt for choice. Day 2 – Around Christchurch On the second day, the weather was not favourable. It was a stark contrast t Saturday’s sunny weather. Walking in the rain, we carried on as planned, but we re-arranged the order of the places that we wanted to see. The first stop, we revisited the Cardboard Cathedral. The materials used to construct this Cathedral are cardboard tube, timber, and steel. This Cathedral is formally called the Transitional Cathedral replacing Christchurch Cathedral which was damaged in the 2011 earthquake. For snow and ice experience we headed off to Antartica, that is the International Antarctic Centre. The entry fee includes Hagglund ride, 4D movie, watching the Little Blue Penguins, and trying a severe Antarctic storm. After our visit to Antarctica, we went to have lunch. We had a delicious Ramen at Ramen Rai Restaurant. When the rain stopped, we visited the Christchurch Botanical Garden. Mindful of the time, we only managed to visit a small section of the garden. It was nice evening walk for us. The garden was well-maintained. This garden is a must when visiting Christchurch. Christchurch is truly a garden city.
