In 1780, he decided to move again, this time to London, and it was there that the present piece was printed. Once in England, his fame soon spread, for he was recognized as the greatest harpist around. Yes, that’s right: his main instrument was not the harpsichord, but the harp. He published many works for harp, which can also be played on the harpsichord, as I’m sure they were back then in the 18th century. This “Favorite Scotch Air with Variations” is a truly delightful work, its theme being the sort of tune that was also quite popular in the thirteen colonies around the time of the American Revolutionary War.
