“Aboriginal people must be able to maintain distinctive cultural, spiritual, physical and economic relationships with water and advance Aboriginal people's rights and interests in water. This is particularly important given the devastating mass fish kill in the Lower Darling Baaka River near Menindee in the New South Wales, Far West earlier this year… that has been attributed to low oxygen levels in the water as floodwaters receded in these areas.” Last Month Gamilaraay woman and Councillor for the North Western Region, Anne Dennis addressed the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues on the progression of First Nations ownership of water. In her Intervention Cr Dennis called for support to build the capacity of local Aboriginal people through the 120 Local Aboriginal Land Council network to ihave greater ownership of and access to water for cultural and economic purposes.
